Template Rejected by Meta
Meta may reject WhatsApp templates during approval. Here’s how to diagnose and fix common issues.
Check rejection reason
- Open the WhatsApp template manager in Integrations
- Find the template with Rejected status
- Read Meta’s rejection reason in the template details
Common rejection reasons
| Reason | Fix |
|---|---|
| Incorrect category | Enable “Allow WhatsApp to assign category” or recategorize |
| Missing opt-out text | Add “Reply STOP to unsubscribe” to marketing templates |
| Variable formatting | Use {{1}}, {{2}} format; map all placeholders |
| Promotional content in utility | Move promotional language to a marketing template |
| URL in body | Use URL buttons instead of inline links |
| Duplicate template | Modify the body text to be unique |
| Policy violation | Review Meta template guidelines |
How to resubmit
- Duplicate the rejected template
- Fix the issue identified in the rejection reason
- Click Submit for approval
- Wait for Meta review (usually minutes)
While waiting for approval
- The previous approved template (if any) continues to work
- Flows without an approved template fall back to system defaults (shared number)
- New flows won’t send until a template is approved
Preventing rejections
- Keep templates concise and transactional for utility category
- Always include STOP language in marketing templates
- Map all variables before submitting
- Use Meta’s auto-categorization option
