Templates

WhatsApp requires pre-approved message templates for all business-initiated messages. Level manages templates differently for shared and BYO numbers.

Shared number templates

On the shared number, templates are admin-managed. Merchants can view them in Message flows but cannot edit body text. Level provides defaults for all message types.

BYO templates

Pro+ merchants with a connected number manage templates in the WhatsApp template manager:

Template lifecycle

  1. Draft — Created, not yet submitted
  2. Pending — Submitted, awaiting Meta approval (usually minutes)
  3. Approved — Ready to use in Message flows
  4. Rejected — Meta declined; edit and resubmit

Approved templates are read-only for body text. Edit variable mappings via Map template variables.

Requirements for flows

Every message type in Message flows needs an approved template assigned. Unassigned flows fall back to system defaults (shared number only).
